Understanding Major vs Minor Chords
Most of the harmony you'll ever play on the piano boils down to two flavors of the same thing. A major chord and a minor chord are built from identical parts — a root, a third, and a fifth — and they differ by exactly one semitone. That single shift is what separates a bright, open sound from a softer, wistful one. This guide unpacks the formula, walks through the mood difference, and shows you how to play both on an online piano without installing anything.
The three ingredients of a triad
A triad is a three-note chord stacked in thirds. Picture the chord as a small snowman of notes:
- The root is the note the chord is named after — the foundation.
- The third sits a third above the root. This is the note that decides the chord's mood.
- The fifth sits a fifth above the root. It anchors and stabilizes the chord.
Stack root-third-fifth and you have a triad. Everything else — sevenths, suspensions, extensions — is decoration layered on top of this basic shape. Master the triad and you've understood the backbone of Western harmony.
The major chord formula
A major triad is built from a root, a major third, and a perfect fifth:
- Root
- Up 4 semitones to the third (a major third)
- Up 7 semitones from the root to the fifth (a perfect fifth)
In C major, that gives you C – E – G. From C to E is four semitones (C, C#, D, D#, E), and from C to G is seven semitones. Hit those three together and you get the warm, settled sound you've heard at the start of countless songs. Play a C major chord and listen for that brightness — it's the sound of "home" in the key of C.
The minor chord formula
A minor triad keeps the same root and the same perfect fifth, but lowers the third by one semitone to a minor third:
- Root
- Up 3 semitones to the third (a minor third)
- Up 7 semitones from the root to the fifth (a perfect fifth)
In C minor, that gives you C – Eb – G. Notice only the middle note moved — E became Eb — and the entire character of the chord changed. Compare the C major chord side by side with the C minor chord and you'll hear it clearly: same skeleton, different mood.
You can apply this to any root. G major is G – B – D; flip it to G minor and you get G – Bb – D. The pattern is always the same — only the accidentals adjust to keep the semitone distances correct.
What the difference sounds like
The mood split between major and minor is so universal that it shows up in everyday language: "that's a major-key song" and "that's a minor-key song" actually mean something to non-musicians. As a rough, useful generalization:
- Major chords sound bright, open, stable, "happy." Think anthems, nursery rhymes, triumphant film themes.
- Minor chords sound darker, softer, more tense, "melancholic." Think ballads, introspective passages, suspenseful cues.
This isn't a hard rule — context, rhythm, and the chords around a single triad all shape the emotional result. But the major/minor distinction is the single biggest emotional lever you have at the chord level, and it costs you one note to flip.
How to play them on this keyboard
You can play C major and C minor right now using the default Wide1 key layout. The middle-C area maps to friendly computer keys:
- C4 = M
- E4 = . (period) or W
- Eb4 = the black key just below E4 (try the key mapped near it)
- G4 = R
So to play a C major chord, hold M + . (or W) + R together — that's C – E – G. To flip it to C minor, replace the E with Eb: M + (the Eb key) + R. Hold the Space bar to sustain the chord and let it ring, just like pressing a damper pedal on a real piano.
Want to move the whole chord up or down? Use the Octave controls to jump twelve semitones, or Transpose to nudge semitone by semitone. Transpose up one semitone and that same finger shape gives you C# major or C# minor — the formula travels intact to every key.
Where chords and scales meet
Chords don't come from nowhere — they're carved out of scales. Take the C major scale (C D E F G A B), stack thirds starting on each note, and you generate a whole family of chords that all "belong" to C major: C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor, and a diminished chord on B. Notice the mix of major and minor — that alternation is what gives a key its emotional landscape.
This is why practicing piano scales and piano chords together pays off so fast: the scale tells you which notes are available, and the chord tells you how to group them into stable, satisfying shapes. Once you can hear a scale and feel its chords, you're thinking in music rather than just pressing keys.
